Locking-free finite elements for the Reissner-Mindlin plate
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two new families of Reissner-Mindlin triangular finite elements are analyzed. One family, generalizing an element proposed by Zienkiewicz and Lefebvre, approximates (for k ≥ 1) the transverse displacement by continuous piecewise polynomials of degree k + 1, the rotation by continuous piecewise polynomials of degree k+ 1 plus bubble functions of degree k+ 3, and projects the shear stress into the space of discontinuous piecewise polynomials of degree k. The second family is similar to the first, but uses degree k rather than degree k + 1 continuous piecewise polynomials to approximate the rotation. We prove that for 2 ≤ s ≤ k + 1, the L2 errors in the derivatives of the transverse displacement are bounded by Chs and the L2 errors in the rotation and its derivatives are bounded by Chsmin(1, ht−1) and Chs−1 min(1, ht−1), respectively, for the first family, and by Chs and Chs−1, respectively, for the second family (with C independent of the mesh size h and plate thickness t). These estimates are of optimal order for the second family, and so it is locking-free. For the first family, while the estimates for the derivatives of the transverse displacement are of optimal order, there is a deterioration of order h in the approximation of the rotation and its derivatives for t small, demonstrating locking of order h−1. Numerical experiments using the lowest order elements of each family are presented to show their performance and the sharpness of the estimates. Additional experiments show the negative effects of eliminating the projection of the shear stress.

A Family of Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Elements for the Reissner-Mindlin Plate
We develop a family of locking-free elements for the Reissner– Mindlin plate using Discontinuous Galerkin techniques, one for each odd degree, and prove optimal error estimates. A second family uses conforming elements for the rotations and nonconforming elements for the transverse displacement, generalizing the element of Arnold and Falk to higher degree.

متن کاملSome New Elements for the Reissner–Mindlin Plate Model
In this work-in-progress we report on a new approach to obtaining stable locking-free discretizations of the Reissner–Mindlin plate model. For a plate of thickness t with midplane section Ω ⊂ R the clamped Reissner–Mindlin plate model determines ω , the transverse displacement of the midplane, and φ , the rotation of fibers normal to the midplane, as the unique minimizer over H̊1(Ω)× H̊(Ω) of the...
متن کاملThe TDNNS method for Reissner–Mindlin plates
A new family of locking-free finite elements for shear deformable Reissner-Mindlin plates is presented. The elements are based on the "tangential-displacement normal-normal-stress" formulation of elasticity. In this formulation, the bending moments are treated as separate unknowns. The degrees of freedom for the plate element are the nodal values of the deflection, tangential components of the ...
متن کاملOn the uniform approximation of the Reissner-Mindlin plate model by p/hp finite element methods
We study the approximation of the Reissner-Mindlin plate using the p/hp version of the finite element method (FEM). Our goal is to identify a method that: (i) is free of shear locking, (ii) approximates the boundary layer independently of the thickness of the plate and (iii) converges exponentially with respect to the number of degrees of freedom. We will consider both standard and reduced cons...

In a recent paper of Arnold, Brezzi, and Marini [4], the ideas of discontinuous Galerkin methods were used to obtain and analyze two new families of locking free finite element methods for the approximation of the Reissner–Mindlin plate problem. By following their basic approach, but making different choices of finite element spaces, we develop and analyze other families of locking free finite ...
